The Way

The house was stone quiet. I was all alone. Even though it was past midnight, I could not sleep. I lie there staring up at the ceiling in the dark. I had no peace. It had been a difficult couple of years. I had tried lots of different things. The new relationships, the new house, the new clothes, the new gym — none of it helped. I was thrashing around in my life trying to find something that would make a difference. I lie there, heavy with resignation that the rest of my life was going to be some form of struggle. Nothing was working. So, the next day… I threw in the towel.

I had enough of trying it my way, and in a fit of frustration I cried out to Jesus and said, “I can’t do this anymore. I am so tired. My way is not working. I am giving everything to you — my whole life. I have no idea what is going to happen, but it’s got to be better than this.”

By letting go of my way, and following Christ’s way, I found peace. The struggle was over. The frustration gone. In its place were clarity, confidence, and joy. It was as if I had discovered a secret map leading me right to the buried treasure. My search was over. I finally found what I had been looking for, and it was right in front of me the entire time.

  1. This sounds good, in fact we need a good “coach” to guide us, but anyway, I can´t avoid feeling frightened if I give myself up completely to Jesus, probably because I feel I am loosing control…

    • Fernando,

Those feelings are completely normal. The opposite of fear is trust, and trust is built on faith. Keep practicing your Catholic faith and receiving the sacraments, and you will receive the grace to trust more.
